Ståle Johan Aklestad

Ståle Johan Aklestad (b. 1980) is woodcutter and photographer, resident in Molde and Hjørundfjord. His quest for nature's lines has resulted in a series of wood products that balance between function and art.

For Aklestad, the creation process is a dance between the monotonous, repetitive and the moments that require full concentration. Wood is a living material with endless variations in color and pattern, and the work on it is a slow process. Still, there are crucial moments where everything is at stake.

In his work, he always hunt for the perfect line - the one waiting to be uncovered in each unique piece of wood. Each bowl is handmade with precision in his workshop in Hjørundfjord, in the midst of the dramatic Sunnmøre Alps.
